How do I start?
“There are a number of ways to get started in Modern Pentathlon”
Schools Biathlon – a competition which is great fun for Primary Year 5 up to Secondary Year 5/6 – classes for both male and female. The Schools Biathlon comprises of two separate events – swimming and running. The distances are aimed for all school children to compete whatever ability, as long as they can swim! Schools are invited to enter individuals and teams. Copy of the entry form will be available from the Download – Competitions page by mid June or contact pat.chaffey@googlemail.com for further details. Individuals may enter on their own as long as they notify the school. Most schools send along a member of staff with their team which is of great help on the day.
Competition Day. The day usually comprises of one event in the morning and one in the afternoon depending on when facilities are available. Each event is a time trial where points are awarded to the time achieved. The points from the two events are added together to decide the placings. Awards are presented for the top six in each class, members of the top three teams and winners of the swim and run.
Time Trial. This is where each competitor swims or runs against the clock and points are awarded according to the times achieved. Click to Schools Biathlon page for more details.

Pony Club Tetrathlon – often found to be the base of those moving on to Modern Pentathlon. In the Pony Club Tetrathlon the swim and run are organised on the distance completed in a set time; the shoot is with air pistol but at a different target; the ride is cross country on your own horse. However athletes from the Pony Club have successfully made the transition to compete at all levels in Modern Pentathlon including international level – Mhairi Spence – Silver Team member at this year’s World Championships in Hungary ; and Freyja Prentice – member of the GB Team at the Youth A World Championships 2007 in South Africa. Go to Pentathlon Today to find out more about each event.
Fencing – the fifth event - has to be introduced in the training programme plus there is a need to gain knowledge on how to cope with riding a unknown horse within the 20 minute warm up before entering the arena to do a course of show jumps.
Fencing – where do I start? Why not get your Pony Club Tetrathlon representative to organise a ‘come & try it’ fencing day? All the kit will be provided along with a coach. All you need to do is organise the hall. Contact Terry on terry.cullen@vodafone.net
Single event background – according to the age there is no reason why someone who comes from a ‘single’ event background cannot make the transition in to Modern Pentathlon. It’s varied events and training programme does not allow time for ‘boredom’ ! Why not attend one of our training days?
