pentathlon-scotland Child Protection Policy
“Everyone has
a duty of care towards children and vulnerable adults to help to protect them from abuse.”
The Scottish Modern Pentathlon Association (SMPA),
trading as pentathlon-scotland, is committed to the protection
of children and vulnerable adults through the provision of this policy and these procedures as a part of the ethics programme
to create a safe environment for sport, where children, vulnerable adults and the adults that aid them are protected and supported.
Statement of Commitment and Intent The SMPA Child and Vulnerable
Adult Protection Policy apply to everyone who works on behalf of our organisation. This includes
all professional and non-professional, full and part-time staff, paid and unpaid employees, coaches, officials, Board/Executive
and Committee members, volunteers, parents, guardians and the children and vulnerable adults themselves. Any other individual who is
associated with the SMPA will agree to abide by our policy and procedures for the duration of their involvement with our organisation
e.g. a specialist working with a group of developing child athletes who is not a member but whose services are used by the
governing body either paid or unpaid. All SMPA affiliated clubs will be required to adopt a reciprocal policy and procedures, either
by adopting the governing body's policy and procedures or by developing a policy and procedures to an agreed standard
that enables the required action for delivering child protection good practice.
Long-term Plan The
SMPA’s long-term plan includes the implementation of the Child and Vulnerable Adult Protection Policy and Procedures.
This Policy and these Procedures will be regularly monitored and reviewed in accordance with changes in legislation and guidance
on the protection of children and vulnerable adults. It will include a review of the policy and procedures and a programme
of training for members.
Policy Statement Regarding Child and Vulnerable Adults Protection in Clubs
It is noted that as part of the
Child and Vulnerable Adults Protection policy adopted by pentathlon-scotland that member clubs are required to have their
own Child Protection Officers. While the Board fully support the need to ensure that there is sufficient
resources available to deal with any such matters it is concerned that clubs will be unable to meet this requirement given
the very small numbers that participate in the sport. The Child Protection Officer consulted with Dougie Arneil,
Support worker, Child Protection in Sport Service, Children First, on this point and he recommended the Child Protection Officer
acted as lead officer for pentathlon-scotland’s current clubs.
The Board has considered this proposal
and are in agreement with it. To ensure clear communication of this it was agreed by the Board that: - Members of any clubs should be advised of this decision and who
is acting as lead officer for child and vulnerable adult protection.
- People working in the clubs with children and/or vulnerable
adults should still undertake the necessary training.
- This decision should be communicated on pentathlon-scotland’s website.
